A Round House…?

Six years ago I was walking around our land searching for a spot to build something. I wasn’t quite sure what it was going to be but it was almost like the tools in my woodshop were whispering to me, “Hey, it’s been awhile, let’s get going.”

Chris finally saw me out in the field and wandered over to see what I was doing. When she found out that I was contemplating—yet again–a building project, she quite innocently inquired, “Oh, are you going to build me an office?” To which (after a long what-should-a-loving-husband-say  pause), I replied, “Uh, sure!”

And that led to something I had been wanting to try for many years... building a truly round building. Not a hexagon or octagon built up from sections of straight walls, but a smoothly curved structure that would wrap around and nurture Chris (and her work as a spiritual director) in perhaps unexpected ways.

I really wasn’t sure how to do it or how it would turn out but three days later the foundation pilings were poured and the floor framing was done (top photo).

Our Kindness Walk started in much the same way, with an urge to do something while walking around searching for the right thing. And while Bob and I have spent time putting in the foundation, we don’t know (or need to know) the results. We are both looking forward to the many ways in which the Walk will wrap around and hold us and others who join us.
