Nine Days
Finished a nine day walk nine days ago,
Sharing cookies and kindness along the way,
But I feel I have so many more miles to go,
As I see the world continue to unravel and fray.
What if we all just walked out our door,
With a bag full of cookies in our hands,
And do what those in power always abhor,
And share kindness as decency demands.
For where in any sacred texts do they proclaim,
It’s justifiable to bomb a child,
Or to imprison and maim,
The meek and the mild?
Our message may seem naive in this cynical world,
Being kind and being good only goes so far,
But as the experiences of our walk unfurled,
The welcome smiles we received became our guiding star.
Because there’s a universal constant alive in each kindness,
Experienced between the giver and receiver,
Allowing love in to gently remind us,
To let go of the skeptic and become a goodness believer.
So now I feel a restlessness in my soul,
Telling me to keep spreading this message of peace,
One cookie at a time I’ll try to dole,
To dismantle the division between people…
Piece by piece.
